The Flinflins spent a difficult year-end, with a very intense professional life that has kept them away from the drawing board. So they decided they needed a little rest in a spot strong enough to inspire a new cover or perhaps even more.
South Africa gathered all suffrages and gave the inspiration for this new year card … until a new Flinflin cover full of exoticism. Happy new year to all of you !
Flinflin worked for many years in one of those US companies who pioneered the PC industry. The saga of Flinflins therefore had to have at least one chapter devoted to this amazing period.
For those who don’t know the story, Apple and Microsoft have fighting in court to determine which one could legitimately claim authorship of the graphical interface of the personal computer.
The truth is that none of them really created it … No more than the Xerox Parc, by the way!
The only one who can truly be credited with this invention is Professor Calculus. Tintin fans all know – since the publication of “The Castafiore Emerald”- that Professor Calculus has long worked on a prototype of a revolutionary color TV set.
Shortly afterwards, he added a few silicon chips to it and created the very first model of the personal computer. And, believe it or not, the Flinflins tribe personally attended one of his earliest demos. Of course there were some glitches that sometimes interfered with readability, but the invention is undeniable.
So, this cover was designed in order to restore the truth of facts!
Anyone who stays in Istanbul, falls immediately in love with the Bosphorus flowing between the European and the Asian districts of the city. Small “vapurs” cross the strait from one bank to another, regularly announcing their departure in a charming old-fashioned concert of foghorns.
At sunset the place to be is the Golden Horn where all you need is to sit on a terrace and sip raki watching the ballet of boats.
This is where the Flinflins family was enjoying the delights of a family event, yet another opportunity to enrich the saga with a new episode: Gold in Bosphorus!
This time there was a little extra challenge: how to cram everyone into a single image with an easy-to-recognize face in this Hergé’s style so difficult to mimic.
I’m not sure the final result is a satisfactory one ! And unfortunately there was no space left to accommodate some mythical characters – beyond Snowy of course – of Tintin’s adventures. We’ll do better next time!

La Corne d’Or ne signifie pas qu’il y ait nécessairement de l’or dans le Bosphore. Quoique …
Toute personne qui séjourne à Istanbul, cède immédiatement aux charmes du Bosphore qui la traverse, séparant la ville Européenne de sa jumelle Asiatique. Les petits « vapurs » qui sillonnent le détroit d’une rive à l’autre annoncent régulièrement leur départ dans un concert désuet de cornes de brumes.
C’est au soleil couchant, à la Corne d’Or qu’il faut s’attarder sur une terrasse et siroter un raki en contemplant le ballet des embarcations.
C’est là que les Flinflins goutaient en famille les joies d’un évènement familial, une occasion supplémentaire d’enrichir la saga d’un nouvel épisode : l’Or du Bosphore !
Avec cette fois un petit challenge supplémentaire : comment caser tout le monde sur une seule image et donner à chacun un physique reconnaissable dans le style épuré si propre à Hergé.
Pas sûr que le résultat soit satisfaisant pour tous ! Et malheureusement plus de place pour loger quelques uns des compagnons mythiques – en dehors de Milou bien sûr – de Tintin.
On fera mieux la prochaine fois !

While Tintin generally used to tour on the Swiss side of the Alps, the Flinflins often go on the French slopes. This very winter was their first attempt to sky the Vallée Blanche. For those who never heard of the Vallée Blanche, it is a huge glacial valley in the heart of the Mont Blanc, and at wintertime, a fabulous 20 kilometers backcountry ski touring, starting from the ridge of the Aiguille du Midi down to Chamonix.
Unfortunately, this winter, the weather was really disastrous: an endless snowstorm that lasted the whole week.
Each morning we came out fully equipped hoping the weather would change. But the barometer, as the pendulum of professor calculus remained desperately invariant. We couldn’t see anything beyond a few yards. With our storm harnesses, we all looked like Yetis in the fog.
Luckily the Flinflins had chosen to stay with in the wonderful mountain lodge of their grandfather’s friends in Chamonix. As he was an antique dealer, he has beautifully decorated his cottage with very fine antique furniture and gorgeous alpine decoration.
So, we spend most of our time, in the warm cottage listening to the old stories of the Valley as this grandfather was also a charming storyteller.
And this cover says it all…
Pour skier dans la vallée Blanche, le pendule de Tournesol n’a été, hélas, d’aucune utilité
Alors que Tintin arpente plutôt le versant Suisse des Alpes, les Flinflins préfèrent sillonner les pistes françaises. Cet hiver il s’agissait de leur première tentative de descente à ski de la Vallée Blanche. Pour ceux qui n’ont jamais entendu parler de la Vallée Blanche, il s’agit d’une immense vallée glaciaire au cœur du Mont-Blanc. L’hiver c’est un itinéraire de ski hors piste fabuleux, avec 20 kilomètres de descente depuis la crête de l’Aiguille du Midi jusqu’à Chamonix.
Malheureusement, cet hiver, le temps était vraiment désastreux: une tempête incessante de neige qui a duré toute la semaine.
Chaque matin, la tribu des Flinflins s’équipait en espérant que le temps se lève. Mais le baromètre, comme le pendule de Tournesol restait désespérément invariant.. Mais le blizzard était tel qu’il était impossible de distinguer quoique ce soit au-delà de quelques mètres. Avec nos harnachements de grande tempête, nous avions l’allure de Yetis dans le brouillard.
Mais heureusement, les Flinflins avaient la chance de séjourner chez des amis dans le magnifique chalet savoyard de leur grand-père à Chamonix. Antiquaire, celui-ci avait composé un intérieur chaleureux merveilleusement décoré de meubles anciens raffinés et d’objets alpins exceptionnels.
Ainsi, Flinflin et sa tribu ont-ils passé la plupart de leur temps, dans la chaleur du chalet en écoutant les histoires anciennes de la vallée car ce grand père était aussi un conteur charmant.

Yesterday, the Flinflins’ kids have received their copy of the Spirou magazine, like every week. But this week, this issue is special: it is dedicated to Spirou’s 75th birthday with a lot of contributions of comics authors.
If you don’t know who Spirou is, i really recommend you have a careful look to it by opening one of his numerous album. Worth it ! But i’ll talk more about Spirou in a future post.
Spirou has been a very close friend of every member of the Flinflin tribe since their youngest age, so we could not miss to celebrate this event.

Fêter le 75e anniversaire de Spirou avec Tintin
Hier, les enfants Flinflins ont reçu, comme chaque semaine, leur exemplaire du magazine Spirou. Mais cette semaine, un numéro spécial célèbre le 75e anniversaire de Spirou, avec des contributions originales de nombreux auteurs de bandes dessinées.
Si vous ne savez pas qui est Spirou, je vous recommande vivement de combler ce manque en ouvrant l’un de ses albums. Cela vaut vraiment le coup. Mais j’aurai l’occasion de parler plus longuement de Spirou dans un prochain post.
Spirou a été, bien sûr, un ami très proche de tous les membres de la tribu Flinflin depuis leur plus jeune âge. Aussi, nous ne pouvions pas manquer de célébrer cet événement.
